What happens when you get diversity right

Diversity

In a world that often feels divided, getting diversity right is more important than ever. When diversity is embraced, it becomes such a powerful force that not only strengthens communities, fostering cohesion, but also creates a society where tolerance and optimism can thrive.

Community: Together we are Stronger

A truly diverse community is one where everyone feels valued, regardless of their background, ethnicity, religion or culture. When diversity is integrated into the very fabric of society, it creates a deep sense of community cohesion. Togetherness.  People from different walks of life come together, share ideas and work towards common goals.

All Walks of Life

Our recent National Diversity Awards saw the huge Liverpool Anglican Cathedral packed with people from all walks of life and socioeconomic backgrounds,  gathered together to celebrate one another’s efforts, achievements and inspiration.

Diversity has the power to strengthen communities. Schools, neighbourhoods and workplaces become spaces where people learn from one another, break down stereotypes and build relationships based on mutual respect. This collective understanding helps knit the social fabric of our communities, making them more resilient in times of crisis.  And that was so evident at the NDAs where the atmosphere was of acceptance and love, embracing the mindset and efforts of others.

We must always remember that small community actions can build to have a big impact.

Make a Difference

As we celebrate our differences, we are reminded of what we share: a desire for connection, togetherness and opportunity.  Prejudice and the fear that comes from difference are, bit by bit, replaced by understanding, acceptance and empathy.

One of my many highlights from the NDAs was watching 97-year-old Clovis Salmon OBE (pictured above) receive the Lifetime Achievement Award. His energy and spirit were contagious and hearing him say, “You’re never too old to make a difference,” was a moment that will stay with me.

Optimism: ‘Diversity Done Right’

When diversity is embraced, it facilitates dialogue and creates spaces where people can openly discuss their differences and find common ground.

A diverse community is one where individuals feel seen, heard and appreciated for who they are. It creates a sense of belonging, which fosters hope and motivation to ‘do something’. We are all far more likely to invest in something if we feel respected for who we are and our voices genuinely matter.

In diverse societies, there is a shared belief that differences can lead to a better, more enriched future. This optimism can fuel everything from economic growth to educational reform.

The True Power of Diversity

Acceptance doesn’t mean erasing differences; it means acknowledging them, valuing them and seeing differences as being common to us all. The National Diversity Awards were choc full of inspirational people, organisations and community groups championing diversity and changing lives.

Some say diversity doesn’t work – I challenge anyone to come to the National Diversity Awards and say that’s not true and they don’t feel included. I just wish I could capture the spirit in the room and bottle the optimism to share far and wide.
