This is an exciting time for The Open University having published our 2022-2026 Equality Scheme and recently launching our Institutional Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Plan, both of which guide us in meeting our statutory duties, developing inclusive policies and realising our social justice mission.
Along with members of the Vice-Chancellor’s Executive, I am dedicated to working with all our staff, students and partners to create a university culture that is welcoming, inclusive and fair. EMPLOYEE PERSPECTIVE
Amo Rose
Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Project Officer
Amo is the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Project Officer for The Open University in Wales. He seeks to apply approaches from LGBTQ+ communities to his work, applying the practice of community-building as a mechanism for embedding inclusion within the workplace.

He is the founder and chair of The Open University Trans Staff Network, which aims to provide a safe space for self-identifying trans and gender-diverse colleagues to build community and share experiences.
As an openly queer, trans and ethically non-monogamous person, Amo has lived experience of negotiating difference within the workplace. This has inspired him to work to create and hold space for difference beyond his own field of experience. In particular, Amo is keen to amplify the voices of disabled colleagues and colleagues from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic backgrounds within the Open University.
Amo says, “It’s a joy to work for a university with equality, diversity and inclusion as an integral part of our mission – to be open to people, places, methods and ideas. Inclusion is indivisible from what we do. I am excited to have been able to contribute to our forthcoming allyship programme and will be supporting the local delivery of this training in Wales.”
Kauthar Bashir
Senior Data Analyst
Kauthar is The Open University’s data lead for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI). She plays a critical role in shaping the University’s equality data strategy, translating business requirements into technical and analytical solutions to aid evidence-driven decision making.

Having worked in various organisations and sectors, The Open University stands out in advancing equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI). Since I joined two and half years ago, the size of our team has more than doubled in size to keep up with the University’s urgency to tackle inequalities in the workplace, education and society.
Through working in the central EDI team, I get the opportunity to inspire and role model data literacy with an equity mindset to empower researchers and analysts across the university in equality research. I have initiated an anti-racist research framework as part of our Open Societal Challenge programme to enhance the impact of our research in addressing societal issues.
The Open University’s strong commitments to gender equality is evident in our 10-year+ participation in the Athena Swan gender equality charter, declining gender pay gap, and the representation of women at senior level. The OU is striving to advance race equality through the Race Equality Charter and is working on towards becoming a Disability Confident Level 2 employer.
I am proud to be part of an organisation that is passionate and truly committed to advancing equality for all.
